Welcome to our Summer 2014 program, where we will begin our journey with Once on This Island.
Every day, we witness how the performing arts enhances a young person’s life. 2ACT, the Summer Theatre Workshop of Ramsey, is a day camp where all activities revolve around acting, singing, dancing, and rehearsing a full-length musical! The amazing result is a complete theatrical production with a professional set, stage lighting, costumes and props.
Each participant in the program plays a significant part, whether they play a leading, featured or ensemble role. Auditions will take place on the first day of camp. Your children will be able to make new friendships in the community, as well as foster old ones!
The original Broadway production of Once on This Island garnered eight Tony nominations, including Best Musical, Book and Score! Through non-stop song and dance, this full-hearted musical tells the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who rescues Daniel, a wealthy boy from the other side of her island. When Daniel is returned to his people, the gods who rule the island guide Ti Moune on a quest that will test the strength of her love against the powerful forces of prejudice, hatred, and even death. The musical showcases many featured roles as well as a large ensemble, that almost never leave the stage! The musical is told in the traditional Carribbean style of storyteller theater.
Rehearsals will take place five days a week from 9am to 3:30pm (3 hour morning session, 1/2 hour lunch and 3 hour afternoon session). The mornings and afternoons will be split up into music, staging and dance rehearsals. Auditions will be held on the first day of camp. Students also have the option to take acting, design, and dramaturgy classes during camp when they are not needed in a specific scene.
Where: Christ Lutheran Church, 3 Church Road, Suffern, NY
We will have special guest artists teaching master classes in the afternoons. The camp will bring together an accomplished and energetic group of artists!
Tech rehearsals will take place at a neighboring theater, from July 15th-July 18th, 9am-3:30pm.
Tech Days will begin on the Tuesday of the final week, on July 15th. We will be rehearsing in the performance space from July 15th- 18th, normal camp hours. Students must be respectful while in the performance space, especially when eating lunch. Parents are to drop off and pick up their children at the performance location on days of tech.
Performances take place on the final Friday and Saturday evening of the program at 7:00pm.
All performances take place at 7:00pm on the final Friday and Saturday evenings of each session. Running time of each show will be approximately 90 minutes with one intermission. On the final Friday of the session, we will rehearse from 9:00am through 3:30pm in the performance space. We will then be ordering pizza for the kids and have a small cast party/ wrap up before we prepare for top of show. Doors open at 6:45 pm.
Please bring the following items to rehearsal every day.
All classes and rehearsals will begin promptly at 9:00am.
Please arrive between 8:45am and 9:00am every day. If you will be arriving late, please let us know by email or phone in advance so that we can organize our rehearsal schedule appropriately.
We will be available for early drop off and late pick up. The hours of this service are 8:00am to 8:30 am and 3:30pm to 5:00pm. We will offer the morning service ONLY if there is need, so please let us know at least 2 weeks in advance.
There is an extra $5 fee per day for both early and late options, per half hour of need (ie. a family needing early drop off at 8:00 am and late pick up at 5:00pm would pay 25 dollars extra that day). Please specify this need in advance of each day and provide payment via cash or check.
We have much to accomplish in a very short time, so time management plays a large role in how we spend our days. A typical day consists of learning the music, choreography and blocking the show. The production experience includes a creative team of a director/ choreographer and musical director as well as other professional assistants, a stage manager, and a technical team for stage lighting, sound reinforcement, costumes, sets, and props.
Theater is a team sport. Every member of the cast is an essential member of our ensemble and we need everyone’s help to create a professional show. There are times when you will be waiting while we fix a lighting cue or work on tightening choreography techniques. There will be other times when you will be helping someone practice his or her lines. We organize the day so that each actor/actress always can contribute to the show. When you are not needed to rehearse a scene, classes in acting, dramaturgy, and design will be available from a theater specialist.
We will provide costumes for the performances. However, children will be responsible for their own shoes and socks. All cast members must supply their own tan jazz shoes. We also request that each performer have something to wear underneath their costumes.
Girls should wear a tan sleeveless leotard and boys should wear a tan v-neck t-shirt. You can purchase shoes and leotards online or at many local shoe stores. If you need a recommendation, please email us at workshops@amcohen.co.
Yes, we welcome walk-ins, although we strongly suggest registering at least two weeks prior to our first day to ensure a smooth start.
Refunds are available for those that suffer from injury or illness with a physician’s note. For more details, please refer to the cancellation policy.
Your child does not have to prepare anything in advance! We will be preparing songs from the show for your child to audition with, which will be taught to them by our music director during the first day of camp. For more information please see our details page.
Parents are asked to prepare a bagged lunch for their child each day, as well as provide transportation to and from the workshop. Parents may choose to lend costume/set/prop items from home for use during performances.
This workshop is an intensive theater training course. Acting is hard work, but with discipline and focus, your child will succeed in our program and benefit the most from our instruction. Our staff is young and energetic, and brings a fresh perspective to the youth theater experience. There will be many chances for our kids to relax and enjoy the company of their peers, building friendships that will last a long time!
